We provided scientific support to the European Commission during the development and negotiations of the European Union Regulation on deforestation-free supply chains. This increase in commitment from the EU ensures that key commodities placed on the EU market cannot contribute towards deforestation and forest degradation around the world.

The new regulation sets out strict due diligence requirements for all companies trading in cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soya, rubber and timber on the EU market. If implemented in the context of wider sustainability considerations, then this new legislation is expected to significantly reduce agricultural drivers of deforestation worldwide.
